Rescan was retained by Climax
Canada
for the decommissioning and closure of a Marine Deaeration Outfall Tank for a submarine tailings placement system and a Fuel Tank Farm in Kitsault northwestern
British Columbia.
Overview
Kitsault is located in northwestern British Columbia, approximately 140 km north of Prince Rupert
, in Alice Arm. In the early eighties Amax operated the Kitsault Molybdenum Mine for approximately three years. The mine was closed when international molybdenum prices fell abruptly making the operation uneconomical. In the late eighties, decommissioning was initiated at the mine site leaving the majority of the facilities in the town of
Kitsault
intact.
Experience
The work included the dismantling and removal of the Deaeration Outfall Tank, Gangway and Pipes, Tank farm and Ancillary Fuel Facilities. Decommissioning the outfall tank was done by cutting the tank at the base just above the concrete foundation. The work for the tank farm included dismantling 5 large fuel tanks, two fueling stations, pump house, barge unloading headers, oil water separator and assorted piping as well as the removal of potential hydrocarbon contaminated soil.
