Profile

The Galore Creek Project is a major copper/precious metals resource located in northwestern British Columbia. The mineralized alkalic porphyry deposit was discovered in the mid-1950s and extensive exploration work was completed on the property by major mining companies during the 1960s, 1970s and 1990s. In 2003, NovaGold Resources Inc. optioned the property and began an extensive exploration, engineering and environmental evaluation.

Overview

The Project is located in the Galore Creek Valley in a remote mountainous region of northwestern British Columbia. The valley is steep and encircled on three sides by high ice-covered mountains. Adjacent areas host high-value fish resources and wildlife (grizzly bear, goat and moose) habitat. At present, access to the property is by helicopter only. Geographically, the property is within the Tahltan Nation Traditional lands, approximately 1,000 km northwest of Vancouver and 150 km north of the deep-sea port located in Stewart, BC. Important Tahltan communities include Dease Lake, which is approximately 282 km from the site, Telegraph Creek, which is approximately 383 km from the site, and Iskut, which is approximately 200 km from the site.

Experience

Rescan/RTEC completed the baseline environmental studies, including eight main areas of study: atmospheric/climate monitoring, surface hydrology assessment, aquatic and fisheries monitoring, soil survey and salvage assessment, rock geochemistry characterization, vegetation assessment, terrestrial wildlife assessment, and archaeological survey.  Rescan/RTEC then wrote the Application for Environmental Assessment and successfully guided the project through the BC Environmental Assessment Office and the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency processes, resulting in project approval by provincial and federal governments.  Rescan is also supporting NovaGold in the permitting process.  Monitoring programs will be part of the authorizations, permits, and licenses that will be required to operate the Galore Creek mine.  Currently, the project is in care and maintenance while NovaGold identifies a cost-effective design for construction.
