Jansen Potash Project

The Project

The Jansen Project is BHP Billiton’s proposed underground potash development located 140 kilometres east of Saskatoon. At full production, the mine capacity is anticipated to produce approximately eight million tonnes per year of saleable potash product for the global market. The expected mine life is about 70 years.

Our Role

Rescan was contracted by BHP Billiton to undertake the Environmental Impact Assessment for the Jansen Project, including detailed baseline environmental and socio-economic studies in support of the Project. Environmental baseline research was initiated in 2008 and continued into 2010. The research covered atmospherics, water, terrestrial ecosystems and wildlife, socio-economics, land use, traditional knowledge, and archaeology. The Project Proposal document was submitted to the Saskatchewan Environmental Branch in December 2008, and Rescan prepared the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for submission on behalf of BHP Billiton to initiate the Saskatchewan environmental assessment review process for the Project. The EIS was completed and submitted to government in December 2010, and Ministerial Approval for the Project was granted in June 2011.
