Rescan Named One of BC's Top Employers for Third Straight Year
Rescan is delighted to have been selected as one of BC’s top employers for the third year in a row. The annual list, compiled by Mediacorp, was published on Saturday, October 13 in the Vancouver Sun, Vancouver Province, and Victoria Times Colonist.
Rescan is proud to be an established leader in environmental management, but we are equally pleased to be recognized as an outstanding Canadian employer. In 2006, Rescan was selected as one of BC’s top employers and was also a finalist in ECO Canada’s Employer of the Year Awards. The year before, in addition to being chosen as one of the top provincial employers, Rescan was named as one of Canada’s best employers of college and university graduates by the Career Directory.

BHP Billiton's Island Copper Mine Wins Reclamation Award

Marc Wen of Rescan and Ben Wichers of BHP Billiton
hold the Jake MacDonald Mine Reclamation Award.
The 31st Annual Mine Reclamation Symposium was held on September 17 to 20th, 2007 in Squamish, B.C. Since 1977, the B.C. Technical and Research Committee on Reclamation has hosted the annual B.C. Mine Reclamation Symposium. Papers and posters address topics of mine reclamation and related issues. Participants include members of the mining industry, consultants, students, representatives from all levels of government and non-government organizations, and other interested parties, both from within British Columbia and around the world.
Rescan was honored to have been in attendance when BHP Billiton’s Island Copper Mine won the Jake MacDonald Mine Reclamation Award, presented annually for the most outstanding achievement in mine reclamation in the province. Rescan has been working with BHP Billiton on this site since the 1980s. Ben Wichers, President of BHP Copper Inc., graciously accepted the award on behalf of his Island Copper team. Marc Wen of Rescan was also in attendance and presented a paper on fisheries habitat compensation at Island Copper. Marc is Island Copper’s Environmental Manager and has been working at this site since its closure in 1996. Rescan is proud to have been a contributor to the reclamation successes at Island Copper.
Rescan Launches Carbon Inventory and Auditing Service
Rescan is pleased to offer a brand new service: Carbon Inventory and Auditing. We believe that the capacity to accurately report and verify carbon sequestration will be of great value to our clients, and will be of increasing importance to regulatory agencies, both in Canada and internationally.
Rescan has assigned a fine team of knowledgeable professionals to lead the Carbon Inventory / Auditing Group, with a combined total of over fifty years of experience in the area of climate change and carbon balance. Dr. Susan Ames is a resource management specialist with extensive knowledge of climate change issues and carbon sources and sinks. Dr. Kai Morgenstern is an environmental scientist who has designed and deployed systems to measure carbon sequestration of forests, and analyzed greenhouse gas emissions for several new mining projects in North and South America. Dr. Paul Greisman’s long career has centred on environmental issues and practical designs to ameliorate environmental impacts.
Our team provides greenhouse gas inventory reporting for existing and proposed developments, including evaluation of emissions, potential emission reductions, carbon measurements in soils and vegetation, and predicted carbon sequestration. In addition, we can provide guidance for monitoring and reclamation program designs, or assess existing inventories as an independent third party. Rescan’s assessments include validation (confirmation of the methodology used for the inventory) as well as verification (confirmation of the amount of carbon that has been emitted or sequestered).
Please contact Christy Gold or Dr. Susan Ames for more information about this new service. You can view our service page by clicking here.
Rescan Wins Second Annual Mining Community Blood Donor Challenge

Jennifer Gerves-Keen of Canadian Blood Services and Robert Pease of AME BC
present Christy Gold and Clem Pelletier with "Most Units Donated" award.
Canadian Blood Services, in partnership with AME BC, hosted the second annual Mining Industry Blood Donor Challenge in April. The Rescan team was honored to receive the award for "Most Units Donated" in the mining challenge for the second year in a row, nearly doubling our contribution from last year!
Our local blood services clinics face many challenges. Currently, B.C. has the lowest percentage of donors in Canada; less than 3% of eligible donors in Vancouver donate blood. Rescan is registered as a Partner for Life with Canadian Blood Services. Through this program, Canadian Blood Services works with hundreds of corporations and community organizations nationwide, giving its participants the opportunity to demonstrate their commitment to saving lives through donating blood, platelets and plasma.
