Sustainability

Rescan believes that sustainability is a balance between the environment, economic development, social development and community prosperity. Rescan delivers environmental management and socio-economic services ranging from fisheries and wildlife baseline studies to atmospheric science, policy development, community consultation and overall environmental and social impact assessments. The consideration of all impacts and effects of resource development on the environment and the community is integral to the work we do. Through these services, we aim to achieve sustainability for all stakeholders.

Our core business is providing environmental, engineering, and socio-economic services to resource development projects. Rescan understands our clients’ goal to leave a positive legacy. Rescan works closely with clients, host communities, and governmental regulators to facilitate an exchange of knowledge, as well as the development of skills, education, resources, and employment. This results in a lasting legacy of regional economic growth and opportunity.

In the Community

The involvement of members of the local community is central to any project’s success. Baseline studies, socio-economic needs assessments, public education, focus groups and multi-stakeholder dialogues are examples of some of the methods used to ensure that the interests of community members are taken into consideration and addressed. Through these studies and public consultation initiatives, Rescan’s hope is that the host community will directly benefit from the developments taking place.

First Nations and Aboriginal Peoples

Collaboration with local First Nations and Aboriginal peoples is imperative to the environmental and cultural sustainability of a project. Rescan ensures that leaders, elders and members of the local community have input on the research and consultation process of each stage of any given resource-based project, allowing it to develop in ways that are culturally sensitive and contribute to the social sustainability of the region.

Incorporating on-the-job training and skills development opportunities for Aboriginal peoples is important. Rescan provides education and direct employment-related training and skills development for Aboriginal peoples in the communities near project sites.

Rescan and the Tahltan Nation Development Corporation have formed a 50/50 joint venture: RTEC (Rescan Tahltan Environmental Consultants). It was designed to meet the business goals and mandates of both companies, and to contribute to sustainable development in Tahltan Traditional Territory.

In the Office

Sustainable office practices are important to Rescan management and staff. Our in-house Green Ideas committee is working to convert more of our internal workflow to a paperless system, to encourage employees to make their commutes greener, and to find other ways to minimize Rescan's own environmental footprint.

Corporate Social Responsibility

Rescan is responsible to the community and values the positive effect of volunteerism and fundraising. Most recently, Rescan became a Partner for Life with Canadian Blood Services. The staff at Rescan is also very active in fundraising for the BC Children’s Hospital. Senior Vice-President, Dr. George Poling, is a longstanding member of the Mining for Miracles Committee. Through this committee, the mining community and associates have raised nearly $9 million for the BC Children’s Hospital Foundation. The Rescan staff participates in such activities as the Annual Celebrity Pie Throw and Jeans Day.
