BHP Billiton has received notice from the Saskatchewan Ministry of Environment that ministerial approval has been granted for the development of the Jansen Potash Project in Saskatchewan. The Project is expected to employ an average of 1,900 people during construction and create approximately 1,000 operational jobs once the mine has reached full capacity. Production of saleable product is anticipated to start in 2015 and is designed to ultimately produce approximately 8 million tonnes per year of agricultural grade potash. The expected mine life is 70 years. |
Rescan was contracted by BHP Billiton to undertake the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the Jansen Project, including detailed baseline environmental and socio-economic studies in support of the Project. Environmental baseline research was initiated in 2008 and was completed in 2010. Rescan submitted the EIS on behalf of BHP Billiton in December 2010, to initiate the Saskatchewan environmental assessment review process for the Project.
